This weekend we Hulk-Smashed our way into 4th place at the Superhero Tournament in Georgia. Dressed as the Hulk, we played against teams dressed as Superman, X-men, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Nicole Floresch was the Player of the Match, again for her beast tackling and offensive plays in the game.

It didn’t look like we would win today. After putting up three tries on us, Duke looked like they were going to steal the victory we so badly wanted. But we bit back the despair and realized that we knew exactly how to fix our defense and pick it up on offense, including not high tackling anymore. We played smart rugby and came back for a 33-17 win! We invited Duke to our new post-game social spot, J&J'S Tavern on University City Blvd. Now we’re getting excited for the SuperHero Tournament in a couple weeks in Georgia!

We traveled to Guilford’s “field” today for a swift victory, our first of this year. The final score was 21-5. Guilford’s players made the mistake of wearing T-shirts instead of jerseys and many of them paid for it. They invited us to water-slide on their campus after the match, and we gleefully obliged.

10-10! Our first tie. Although we should have won, and would have if the ref had seen Maddy Clark’s try or if Zee (Linsey Robertson) hadn’t run out the back of the try zone. The tie and awesome after-game social with Wake Forest definitely lifted the girls’ spirits and now we’re ready to take on Guilford in a few weeks.

Our first game of the season was, unfortunately, another loss. It was understandable given the high level of rugby that ECU was playing. Despite this, we still gave them hell. The team stayed overnight in Greenville for an awesome social put on by ECU at The Player’s Retreat.

This weekend we played teams including College of Charleston, University of South Carolina, ECU and UNC B-side. Liz Alliss scored her and our first try of the season, earning her the nickname “Zulu.” We came in 11th place in the Rucktoberfest tournament but really came together as a team and as friends instead of a group of strangers.

Our first game with a full team, Sept 12 will be an epic date for the UNCC Women's Rugby Club. Today , we played against a hard team on their home field that is much more experienced than us, but we never gave up. The final score was 0-65. Nicole Floresch (a brand new rookie!) was our MVP of the match for her amazing tackling. We will be returning to Appalachian State University in less than a month for the Rucktoberfest Tourney to prove ourselves.
